Bad news: looks like my stress fracture is going to continue to plague me for a little bit longer. Last week I went on a mile-long run, and played soccer for 40 minutes, and I have been feeling it. Here’s some evidence of my one-mile run:
Good news: determining that I need to hold off on running and most fun things for a little while longer, I accepted an invitation to go to a boxing class today. This was my first official boxing class of all-time, so it was really exciting. My friend/school teammate who invited me was my partner, and I got to punch him in the face two times and, he totally believed me when I said it was an accident. Luckily he has a very sturdy face, and he got to punch me some too, so it was fair (note to self, for future classes: when partnering up in a boxing class, make sure your partner does the punching first, so you know how aggressively they deserve to be hit back once it’s your turn).
I’ve been to several kick-boxing classes before, and done Kenpo X of P90X, but those all involve kicking, while this class was restricted to just punching people/things. The foot movement reminded me of basketball, the way you shuffle around. I kept trying to get into low defensive stance, but Scott said that I should stand up taller, and take advantage of my height. I don’t really get the reasoning yet, but Scott’s smart and I believe most things he says.
The only thing I’m not a big fan of, is having to learn different combinations and names/numbers of moves. This is a big reason I’m not a dancer. The other reason I’m not a dancer, is that I feel stupid most of the time that I’m dancing, especially when I’m trying to figure out moves/combinations. At least in boxing I don’t feel stupid at any point, just irritated and impatient when I don’t already know things I want to know. I assume I’ll catch on soon though, it doesn’t seem too complicated in this case. Then I’ll be back on track to getting an Ultimate Hard Body.
Any other runners out there who cross-train with boxing?
PS. One last piece of good news: my college exam fame is growing – check out this exam question soon to be on a test somewhere in Oregon, thanks to my friend Vincent:
