One Mile Time Trial Recap

Last weekend, I hosted an unofficial timed-mile trial, as promised.  The turnout was 400% greater than expected, which sounds overwhelming, but I thought only one person would come, so I was very pleasantly surprised!  I even got an offer from Uberthons to have some free timing done, which would have made the race slightly more official.  I let them know that I was envisioning a one-person run, so they wisely stayed home from this one, but I’m hoping to do some kind of timed mile with a slightly more official feel at some point this year.  Would you be interested in running an official timed mile, or am I the only one who wants to re-live my glory days of the high school timed mile?

Until then, here’s a few pictures of our champions that turned out on Saturday.  Keeping with the unofficial theme, I deliberately neglected to get a picture of everyone together.

I know the people in these pictures are super tiny and far away, but I had to look at my watch when they were close enough to me to take a good picture.  Jasmine (in the pink pants) started out full-steam, as 7-year-olds often do, and Brian (the only other person in this photo, who we recruited on the spot to join our run) took about a lap to catch up to her.  From that point on he went on to complete his fastest mile in years.  Nice work, Brian!
The first-place champion from races such as the Shamrock Run and Bridge to Brews showed up and continued his trend of being a first-place champion.
This was Jasmine’s first-ever official timed mile!  Afterward she pointed out that, “a mile is a pretty long way for a 7-year-old” and also that “Chris [first-place champion] doesn’t understand that it’s not about winning, it’s about having fun and being healthy, and that it’s mean to beat a 7-year-old.”  I think she raises some excellent points.
In true Portland-running-event form, we went and had beer afterward.  Other than pancakes, I still can’t think of a better post-race consumable (and it was too late in the day for pancakes).

I must confess, I started running at a very early age. Sadly, my runs were unblogumented until around age 23, so you'll have to use your imagination for all the runs I went on before that. Running has always been my go-to sport, but sadly, I spend a good amount of my time with chronic injuries. I have learned to entertain myself athletically with other pursuits such as kettlebell, yoga, and bikini competitions, when I can't run. In addition to my unique talent for working out and then blogging about it, I am an amateur puppy stylist and photographer, television enthusiast, and I'm usually CPR/AED certified, but I would still prefer if you didn't pass out when we're together.

    Did the seven year old enjoy her beer? I certainly hope so.
