Happy New Year, and welcome to the fourth year of my blog! I love making New Year’s resolutions, but I have traditionally set wildly over-ambitious goals. That’s why this year, I’m keeping things a little more realistic. My 2013 running-resolution is to exercise for a total of three hours a week.
I generally like to set mileage goals because I love tracking mileage, but I think this may be the number one contributor to my injuries. Trying to meet goals often leads to pushing myself too hard too fast, and I get hurt. Case in point, I am making an “exercise” resolution instead of a “running” resolution this year because at the moment I have a stress fracture, and so running is currently off the table.
I’m sad to report that also because of my injury, this year I won’t be doing a January mile trial. I will do it as soon as I’m back in the game and have trained a tiny bit. I would like to once again congratulate Chris McDonald and Vincent Rupp for most closely guessing my mile time in my mile-time-prediction contest that I had for the last two years, and to let everyone know that I finally delivered their well-earned prizes! They each received 2013 calendars featuring extra-cute pictures of my dog Pascal and his puppy friends on every month. Hopefully I will be more timely with prizes in the future, but I’m sure that Chris and Vincent will confirm that their calendars were well worth the wait.
I hope all of you have made awesome resolutions to better/worsen yourselves as appropriate for 2013. I think about 90% of the people I’ve asked about NY resolutions have said “I don’t do resolutions because I’m too good for that and resolutions are stupid and blah blah blah.” I have worked hard to resist giving these people resolutions that I think they should set, because I assume they won’t listen to me anyway. Let me know if you came up with any amazing resolutions, or if you set one last year that you accomplished/didn’t accomplish. I certainly didn’t make my goal of 30 miles a week (that probably only happened six or seven times).
So far my resolution is off to a great start, with a solid 40 minutes of exercise logged for the year! I have also perfectly maintained my non-running resolution to not buy any shoes this year, and I feel great about my decision to not resolve to eat only one dessert a day, as I was considering. I hope yours are going just as well!

At Christmas, I received a million dollars from my father, complete enlightenment from the Dalai Lama, and met the (much younger) woman of my dreams. None of that meant half as much as the Pascal & Friends Calendar. Truly, I thank you.
I’m so glad that the prize went to such a grateful recipient! And I’m also very happy for you for all the money and the lady friend. You can use the calendar to keep track of all your dates and the money you spend!
