Eating Thai Food and Then Running a Lot

By Colleen @colleenalicia · On January 7, 2010
I didn’t quite make it to the two hours I had planned on last night, because Laura and I decided to eat a bunch of Thai food right before we worked out, so we didn’t make it into the gym until 20 minutes after The Biggest Loser had started. This is maybe okay, since I haven’t run more than five miles since Thanksgiving. Bob and Jillian were just what I needed to give me the extra push. Also watching really fat people struggle is helpful because right when I was feeling pretty tired, they were all throwing up/dry heaving/crying, and I realized that I was nowhere near that state so I could probably keep going.

Best workout partners.

The downtown 24 Hour Fitness is also a great place to go because there’s a good chance that someone around you will do something, or just generally be, entertaining. Last night it was this girl who seemingly poured water all over her treadmill and the floor next to it (I’m guessing it was an accident, but it looked very intentional from my perspective) and then continued to run until a staff member came by and she waved him over. He started going to get stuff to clean it up, realized she was still just running, so turned back and turned her treadmill off and made her come with her. When they came back he left her with a giant roll of paper towels and she kind of wiped off some of the water on the treadmill, and then left the roll and the used paper towels in a pile on the ground next to her. She then got back on the treadmill to continue her workout. However, because of the way treadmills work (I’ll assume you know), most of the treadmill was still covered in water. There was another girl who was significantly less entertaining, but was wearing two coats and pajama bottoms and would walk on the treadmill for a period of 5 minutes, wander around the gym, come back and repeat. This happened about four times at least. If these things don’t sound amusing to you, imagine that you’ve been running in place for an hour, and then you witness them. Instantly funnier.

I’m taking a rest day today because it’s cold and windy and I accidentally fell asleep during my planned run time.

Also, despite the fact (that I made up) that working out right after you eat burns double calories, I don’t recommend it. Aside from getting reminded how tasty my dinner was every time I burp, there are no real advantages, and mostly it’s kind of painful. You might have already known this.

I must confess, I started running at a very early age. Sadly, my runs were unblogumented until around age 23, so you'll have to use your imagination for all the runs I went on before that. Running has always been my go-to sport, but sadly, I spend a good amount of my time with chronic injuries. I have learned to entertain myself athletically with other pursuits such as kettlebell, yoga, and bikini competitions, when I can't run. In addition to my unique talent for working out and then blogging about it, I am an amateur puppy stylist and photographer, television enthusiast, and I'm usually CPR/AED certified, but I would still prefer if you didn't pass out when we're together.

About Me

I’m Colleen. I started this blog when I was 23 years old and training for my first marathon. I was single, semi-employed, generally directionless in life, and had a lot of free time on my hands. I have a lot less free time now, but I still love to come here and dump my rambling, unedited thoughts after a workout or race once in a while.
