Marathon Training

By Colleen @colleenalicia · On March 29, 2010

June 5 sounds kind of far away right now, but right after signing up for my marathon it occurred to me that it’s only 9 weeks from now. I guess that means I need to run a whole bunch now. My tentative plan is to follow this schedule from Hal Higdon’s training site:

It was originally an 18 week plan, but there’s no time for that now, so I just started yesterday with the 12 miles on Sunday of week 1. Side bar: I hate when calendars put Sunday at the end and Monday at the beginning. That’s not how it (time) works in my head.

I did the 12 on Leif, and it was okay. I almost didn’t go because it was raining so much, but then there was a magical 2 hour window of no rain. Despite living in Portland, I kind of hate running in the rain, and pretty much never do it. Sometimes it rains during the middle or end of my runs, but I never start running in the rain. Once I’m going I don’t mind, but initially going outside when it’s wet/crappy out is way too hard for me.

I haven’t run more than 10 miles in over a month, so it was kind of hard, but mostly just pretty boring. Nothing weird or creepy happened and Pascal kept pulling too much so my arm hurt and then I was bored and slightly angry. Luckily after about 8 miles I saw this guy running the opposite direction with the weirdest running form ever, and the thought of it kept me entertained for the next half mile or so. He ran normally with his legs, but when he brought his arms forward he would swing them from side to side a whole lot so he looked like he was practicing a dance or at a rave or something.

Next weekend my long run is supposed to be 19 miles, but I might increase my mileage a little more slowly than that. But maybe not, because increasing slowly wouldn’t be very ultimate hard body of me.

Miles run this week: 12
Miles run in 2010: 249

I must confess, I started running at a very early age. Sadly, my runs were unblogumented until around age 23, so you'll have to use your imagination for all the runs I went on before that. Running has always been my go-to sport, but sadly, I spend a good amount of my time with chronic injuries. I have learned to entertain myself athletically with other pursuits such as kettlebell, yoga, and bikini competitions, when I can't run. In addition to my unique talent for working out and then blogging about it, I am an amateur puppy stylist and photographer, television enthusiast, and I'm usually CPR/AED certified, but I would still prefer if you didn't pass out when we're together.

I don’t think you understand the concept of Ultimate Hard Body (the theme of this blog). UHB lifestyle doesn’t allow for concern of upping mileage by 30 mpw and swinging logs, and I have no idea what a claymore is, so also not a concern.

Also I’m well aware of when to back off. I’m just using this plan as a guideline.

    About Me

I’m Colleen. I started this blog when I was 23 years old and training for my first marathon. I was single, semi-employed, generally directionless in life, and had a lot of free time on my hands. I have a lot less free time now, but I still love to come here and dump my rambling, unedited thoughts after a workout or race once in a while.
