The 2012 New York Marathon is scheduled to start in just over four days, as they prominently point out on their website. The problem is that Hurricane Sandy is currently playing interference with marathon-running activities, and most other activities that people in New York like to do. The good news is that a two-day old timeline indicates that the storm will calm down by tonight, and so chances are that people won’t have to worry about a hurricane blowing them over while they’re running. The question is, will there even be a marathon in New York this Sunday?
Being on the West Coast, it’s hard to determine what shape the marathon course is in. Earlier marathon officials were assuring everyone that they would be ready, but now they don’t sound so sure, with only a “promise of updates on marathon preparations.” They claim that the marathon route isn’t quite as affected as other parts of New York, and that they “have time on their side.”
I would personally like to see the marathon happen this Sunday. If Jimmy Fallon and David Letterman can tape their shows without an audience during the storm, then New York can run a marathon after the storm. The sad part is that a lot of people probably couldn’t get there because of flight cancellations, but sometimes that’s just as much a part of the race as the actual running of it. If this ends up happening, I’m curious about a few things:
- What do you wear when running in a post-disaster marathon? Is a running skirt still appropriate? Was it ever appropriate to wear a running skirt?
- Will the grocery stores have restocked their food supply? How are you supposed to carbo load when the city’s carb supply has been ransacked?
- Will this guy be running the marathon? He seems adventurous, yet out of shape:
Good luck to anyone who will be braving the aftermath, if you’re given the chance! I hope that me and you and everyone we know are all safe and haven’t incurred too much property damage during the storm!
Edit: For another NY Marathon blog post from someone who wasn’t too lazy to add a few cool pictures like I had originally intended, check out this guy’s blog!
