Happy Birthday to Me!

By Colleen @colleenalicia · On June 15, 2012

This Tuesday, I turned 26, and so far it’s been pretty great.  Of course I didn’t expect anything less than great, because 26 is twice 13, and my year no. 13 wasn’t bad, and so I assume that 26 will be at least twice as not bad, and 2(not bad) = great.  Here’s a picture of me when I was 13 so you can imagine just how great 26 should be for me:

For such a monumental birthday, I knew I had to plan a pretty amazing party to celebrate.  The problem was that it was on a Tuesday, which means no late nights for a lot of people, and no daytime outings (I guess some people work during the workweek).  I also couldn’t think of anything particularly exciting or creative, so I just went with what basically every run group I know does on a regular basis: running and drinking.

It turns out, my friends thought this was a great idea.  A lot of them didn’t do the running part with me, but I still got big thumbs up for the idea.  I guess people who don’t go to running groups don’t realize how common this activity is, because I got a lot of props for creativity.  My fear that almost nobody would come on the run was squashed when several friends showed up, and none of them were even particularly serious runners.  I think one of them may have never gone on a run in her life, which made showing up particularly ambitious, and made me particularly grateful and happy.  Here’s the running crew, minus one:

We ran from Pizza Schmizza on NW 21st to Produce Row (just over the Burnside Bridge), stayed there for a while, and then dashed back to 21st to end up at Blue Moon.

I forgot to turn of Nike+ at Produce Row, so my statistics for this run are a little off.  It also thinks we went a lot faster on the way there than the way back, which is very untrue.  My thought that people wouldn’t stay out late on a Tuesday was untrue as well.  People stayed out very late, and drank lots of beer.  There were a few key players missing, but for the most part all my best friends, as well as some new friends, showed up and it was fantastic.  Thank you, friends!

For a final bit of running and birthday related news, one pretty great person gave me two new pairs of running shoes for my b-day!  Now I can finally stop choosing between my Nike Frees and my Lunarfly shoes that are completely worn out (both of which are terrible for anything longer than 4-5 miles).  I haven’t tried either one out yet, but I’ll let you know how they are once I do.  Here’s the Nike Zoom Vomero+ 7:

These are on the supportive side, and have fancy rubber on the bottom for pavement running.  Or so I hear.  And here’s the Nike Lunarfly+ 3 Breathe:

These ones are lighter, and most likely what I’ll be wearing for my upcoming half-marathon.  Look how annoyed Pascal looks.  He turned 5 last week and now he’s like a grouchy old man.  I think it’s because he had an amazing birthday party too, but he’s a dog so he doesn’t understand why we don’t treat him special every day now.

Pascal and I won’t be getting any birthday parties for another year, but if you would like me to plan your running and drinking birthday/wedding/special occasion celebration, let me know and I’ll put together something really good for you.  For a fee, of course.  If you decide to use my party plan, feel free to just send me a check.

I must confess, I started running at a very early age. Sadly, my runs were unblogumented until around age 23, so you'll have to use your imagination for all the runs I went on before that. Running has always been my go-to sport, but sadly, I spend a good amount of my time with chronic injuries. I have learned to entertain myself athletically with other pursuits such as kettlebell, yoga, and bikini competitions, when I can't run. In addition to my unique talent for working out and then blogging about it, I am an amateur puppy stylist and photographer, television enthusiast, and I'm usually CPR/AED certified, but I would still prefer if you didn't pass out when we're together.

About Me

I’m Colleen. I started this blog when I was 23 years old and training for my first marathon. I was single, semi-employed, generally directionless in life, and had a lot of free time on my hands. I have a lot less free time now, but I still love to come here and dump my rambling, unedited thoughts after a workout or race once in a while.
