Happy National Donut Day!

By Colleen @colleenalicia · On June 1, 2012

As you all know, today is National Donut Day!  You might not know that this day was created to honor women who gave men donuts during some war, and is celebrated by forcing men to feed donuts to women!  Of course I’m paraphrasing from my memory of when I read that website’s page for 8 seconds, but that’s the general idea.

My friend Laura informed me that Krispee Kreme is giving out free donuts today, but that’s not really special, because they do that every time you go there.  In high school my friend’s and I would go there late at night and they would just give us entire boxes of donuts for free.  They have an interesting business model.  My main issue with Krispee Kreme is that there isn’t one within running distance from my house.  Luckily there is a Sesame Donuts very nearby, and they have a 25 cent special on donuts today!  Not quite as good as free, but they never give away free donuts, so it’s still special.

I decided to run over to Sesame Donuts right when school was getting out, because I wanted to stand in line for a long time behind tons of kids.  It didn’t actually take that long, but it felt like a long time because there was a high-school girl behind me who had no concept of personal space.  She was extremely excited to discover that Sesame Donuts now has Baskin Robbins ice cream though, and I appreciated her enthusiasm.  Just not her closeness to me.  Here’s a picture of the insane line I had to wait in:

The best part about my National Donut Day was right before I got to the counter, when this guy came and handed out hot-out-of-the-oven donut holes.  Newly deep-fried donuts are probably my favorite food of all time.

The worst thing about this situation was that you can’t see the donuts until you get to the front, but then they want you to be ready immediately, so there’s very little time to make a decision.  I almost had a panic attack.

On my way out I noticed that my new favorite hot yoga place had put an ad up in Sesame Donuts.  I wonder how many people try it out based on the donut ad.

After this huge ordeal I had to run all the way home before I could eat my donut (eating a donut half-way through a run is cheating, unless you’re on a hash or something).  I usually get marble bars because they seem bigger than normal donuts for me, but this is what I picked out in the midst of my panic.  It’s a chocolate cake donut with tons of tasty frostings on it, and it’s extremely fresh, and probably ranks among the top ten donuts of my life.  I’m eating it right now, it’s so great.  You should go get one right now.

I must confess, I started running at a very early age. Sadly, my runs were unblogumented until around age 23, so you'll have to use your imagination for all the runs I went on before that. Running has always been my go-to sport, but sadly, I spend a good amount of my time with chronic injuries. I have learned to entertain myself athletically with other pursuits such as kettlebell, yoga, and bikini competitions, when I can't run. In addition to my unique talent for working out and then blogging about it, I am an amateur puppy stylist and photographer, television enthusiast, and I'm usually CPR/AED certified, but I would still prefer if you didn't pass out when we're together.

They once gave me a free piece of baklava! But it was not a donut.

Those glazed raised donut holes are the best, though, it cannot be denied.

    About Me

I’m Colleen. I started this blog when I was 23 years old and training for my first marathon. I was single, semi-employed, generally directionless in life, and had a lot of free time on my hands. I have a lot less free time now, but I still love to come here and dump my rambling, unedited thoughts after a workout or race once in a while.
