2012 Portland Color Run Results

By Colleen @colleenalicia · On September 30, 2012

Did you do the Portland Color Run yesterday?  I’m guessing that you did, because every single person on my Facebook posted pictures of it yesterday.  This is not an exaggeration.  Every person.  I had briefly considered going and volunteering, but for some reason that didn’t happen, so I wasn’t actually there in any capacity, I just feel like I was because of the extreme Facebook documentation overload.  The reason I find this notable, is because I go to a good number of races, and rarely do you get these kinds of numbers for a 5k.  The Shamrock Run, Race for the Cure, and the Starlight Run are all big, but have also been around for years, and have some other good stuff going for them.  I would never expect a run that costs $40-$55 (depending on how early you register), where you get crap thrown at you, to be the new big thing, but Surprise! It is!

Apparently over 15,000 people showed up.  Nicely done, Color Run!  As you can imagine, I was only kidding when I titled this post “Color Run Results.”  This event is not actually timed.  If you’re wondering what they did with the portion of your entry fee that usually goes to timing chips and equipment, my guess is that it went to all of these iPads:

This is the part of the race where everyone has to beat three levels of angry birds before they can proceed.

This is the part of the race where you find somebody to whisper sweet nothings to.

Clearly I have a different perspective of this race, as someone who wasn’t there and hasn’t actually talked to anyone who was.  I generally avoid races like these because I pay so much money just to do the runs that are actually timed races, and then I have no money left over to pay for people to throw powder at me.  Maybe next year I’ll try it out though (assuming my shin splints ever go away), it looks like a pretty good time.

I must confess, I started running at a very early age. Sadly, my runs were unblogumented until around age 23, so you'll have to use your imagination for all the runs I went on before that. Running has always been my go-to sport, but sadly, I spend a good amount of my time with chronic injuries. I have learned to entertain myself athletically with other pursuits such as kettlebell, yoga, and bikini competitions, when I can't run. In addition to my unique talent for working out and then blogging about it, I am an amateur puppy stylist and photographer, television enthusiast, and I'm usually CPR/AED certified, but I would still prefer if you didn't pass out when we're together.

I “ran/walked” this with my son. We had fun and that was mainly what I wanted to do with him. It was very crowded and I am not sure I would do it again but I got the kid off my back, he was asking to do this last year when we ran across a video! Haha.

Having a kid along makes this race make a lot more sense – children love having things thrown at them!

    About Me

I’m Colleen. I started this blog when I was 23 years old and training for my first marathon. I was single, semi-employed, generally directionless in life, and had a lot of free time on my hands. I have a lot less free time now, but I still love to come here and dump my rambling, unedited thoughts after a workout or race once in a while.
